.Jan de Flaubert is a French artist based in Marseille.
He has painted throughout his life, although for many years his practice remained essentially private. He worked mainly for himself and for people close to him, deliberately keeping his distance from both the art market and institutional art circles. Much later, discovering online galleries allowed him to show his work to a wider audience without giving up this independence.
For several years, his work developed primarily through abstract acrylic painting on canvas. Intense colour, irregular textures, lines and mysterious signs already formed the core of his visual vocabulary.
Some of these signs originate in a recurring experience. On the edge of sleep, Jan de Flaubert sometimes sees unknown characters passing before his eyes, arranged like fragments of vertical writing. Almost everything disappears when he wakes, but a few shapes remain and later reappear in his work. He neither tries to decipher them nor assigns them any fixed meaning.
His work gradually moved towards a territory between abstraction and figuration. Faces, bodies, trees, houses, staircases and ordinary objects now enter his compositions, but rarely as simple subjects. They emerge from the pictorial matter, dissolve into it or appear to be crossed by it.
In 2026 this evolution led him to make digital painting the centre of his current practice. He draws upon his own distinctive visual vocabulary and previous works, reference photographs, digital painting and retouching tools, and, when the project requires it, AI-assisted generation tools. The images are developed in successive stages, modified, and reworked until they align with the pictorial world he seeks to create.
The technique has changed. The search remains the same: to create images in which something seems to surface behind the visible without ever becoming entirely graspable.
